Job Summary

The Manager, Insurance is responsible for supporting the Senior Manager, Insurance in his role and in the development and implementation of CN’s commercial insurance programs and strategy. In achieving this objective, the incumbent will participate in the development of the long-term assurance plan, while responding to day-to-day internal requests. The Manager, Insurance will also be actively involved in developing and maintaining relationships with external service providers.

Main Responsibilities

Insurance Strategic Plan, Regulatory and Reputational Risk Management

Stay abreast of market conditions and trends for the Class 1 railways regarding property, third party liability as well as Directors and Officers (D&O) coverage

Review CN’s and their subsidiaries’ individual insurance programs on an annual basis to resolve legal responsibilities, risk, and the adequacy of programs

Propose solutions to reduce insurance risk and further CN’s reputation

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to participate in the development and implementation of the insurance strategy to promote the company’s business objectives and reputation

Monitor the collection of all the information necessary for the preparation of insurance submissions and applications

Participate in drafting and reviewing the annual submissions and applications for the main insurance programs

Take part to the establishment and the adaption of the priorities to advance the insurance risk mitigation objectives in the intersection of regulatory, legal, legislative, and business objectives

Provide support in the negotiation of the terms and conditions of insurance agreements with the team of brokers

Support the Senior Manager, Insurance in contract negotiations and make sure that goals are met regarding insurance requirements for CN and third parties

Collaborate with Law and Procurement to review legal contracts for vendors, suppliers, business and operation partners or clients

Work proactively with CN brokers and forensic accountants on the preparation of large insurance claims

Contribute to the development and presentation of legal arguments to CN’s insurers on insurance claims

Participate on the Corporate Incident Management Team for crisis resulting from a derailment

Stakeholders’ Engagement

Interact with external brokers and oversee the completion of work against goals

Assist the Senior Manager, Insurance in communicating strategic directions to CN’s Canadian and foreign brokers

Maintain good relationship with local brokers

Take part in meetings with the senior insurance underwriters for the renewal of CN’s main insurance programs and organize annual meetings

Contribute to the development and maintenance of relationships with government officials involved in the review of the legal insurance requirements of CN and its subsidiaries

Develop business relationships with other CN departments allowing an effective collaboration in the resolution of various insurance requests

Develop and participate in insurance training and information sessions with internal stakeholders.

Professional development

Partner and engage with cross-functional peers and other stakeholders, establishing collaborative and productive dotted line relationships

Establish a plan to improve and maintain knowledge in risk management, insurance and the Class 1 railway industry through relevant training and involvement

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The current policy allows for remote work on Wednesdays and Fridays. The incumbent may be required to work overtime as required. In addition, the role may result in some travel across Canada and the United States. Due to nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to work in a high-pressure environment, meet deadlines to ensure executive and Board level deliverable, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements

Experience

Insurance

  •        Between 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in the insurance and risk management industry
  • o   Experience working for a publicly listed company
  • o   Experience communicating and presenting insurance information
  • o   Experience as an expert in insurance and risk management and as a key contact for various departments of the company
  • o   Experience working for a major transportation company
  • o   Experience working in a Class 1 railway*
  • *Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

  •        Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce with a Statistics, Economics, Finance, or Accounting specialization
  •        Certification as a damage insurance representative or a claims adjuster*
  •        Risk Management Certificate (CRM) or CIP designation*
  • *Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge
