The Senior Vice-President,  Canadian Banking, Capital Markets, and Finance, Internal Audit provides strategic direction and leadership to the assigned portfolios, consistent with the strategies and priorities of the Internal Audit Division and the CIBC group of companies. The incumbent uses a breadth of knowledge and experience to provide value-added audit services and, to develop and maintain senior level client relationships.

The SVP has overall accountability for providing executive leadership and expertise in managing audit services to areas of the bank, in order to ensure audit coverage and adherence to professional and corporate governance standards and objectives. In carrying out this mandate, the incumbent will develop and maintain strong partnerships with other governance functions and provide consistent and effective support to stakeholders and regulators in various jurisdictions.

Through the use of industry best practice knowledge, the incumbent will provide independent and objective assessments as to the adequacy and effectiveness of internal control programs to assist senior management in control and risk strategies, and in the development and implementation of solutions to issues.

The SVP is accountable for executing on the Real Estate Secured Lending (RESL) audit strategy to ensure comprehensive internal audit coverage of Real Estate Secured lending including but not limited to governance, first-line, risk management, regulatory compliance, technology infrastructure and innovation, finance and treasury. The role is also accountable for ensuring appropriate end-to-end coverage of other Canadian Banking businesses including, but not limited to Capital Markets, Finance, Commercial Banking, Cards, Retail Brokerage, Private Wealth Management and Business Contact Centres and related processes and controls.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Demonstrate  a deep understanding of Real Estate Secured Lending products and regulatory requirements and be knowledgeable of current and emerging industry practices and regulatory expectations relating to internal control, risk management and governance systems and processes relating to Real Estate Secured Lending and other Canadian Banking businesses.
  • Maintain knowledge of new initiatives and risks by participating in appropriate management committees and liaising with oversight functions such as Compliance and Risk Management.
  • Establish in partnership with the EVP and Chief Auditor and other members of the management team within the Internal Audit division, the vision, long-terms strategic business direction, objectives, and plans for the Internal Audit Division.
  • Conduct an annual risk-assessment and produce a dynamic audit plan that will accomplish the mandate, objectives, and scope of the Audit Charter including but not limited to planned audit activities related to Data Governance and Management and Cybersecurity.
  • Maintain and enhance the RESL audit strategy with input from other members of the management team and other governance functions. This will include:
  • Providing leadership to define effective business processes for the Audit team and working with other members of management on business process relating to assigned business groups;
  • Ensuring risk assessment related to RESL and other Canadian Banking businesses is current through annual planning and continuous monitoring activities;
  • Manage the assessment of audit needs on risk profiles developed with the designated business areas;
  • Establishing objectives and developing work plans covering audit activities and projects to ensure the effective achievement of results;
  • Ensuring that the reports provided to Canadian Banking businesses are supported by appropriate analysis and evidence;
  • Providing the necessary leadership to change strategy, direction and approach to take advantage of favourable patterns and trends within the auditing industry;
  • Working with the Chief Auditor to ensure appropriate resources with skills and experience relating to RESL and other Canadian Banking businesses;
  • Considering the scope of work of the external auditors and regulators for the purpose of providing optimal audit coverage to CIBC in the most efficient and effective manner;
  • Preparing and monitor a budget that is consistent with the implementation of the audit plan;
  • Provide advisory/consulting services, as requested, in a manner that ensures independence is not compromised;
  • Providing analysis and reports to the Chief Auditor in support of their responsibilities and to the Audit Committee, Board, CEO and Executive Committee of CIBC as required;
  • Ensuring that the audit plan for RESL and Canadian Banking is completed efficiently and effectively in line with the RESL Audit Strategy and the Annual Audit Plan approved by the Audit Committee; and
  • Conducting an annual risk-assessment and produce a dynamic audit plan that will accomplish the mandate, objectives, and scope of the Audit Charter including but not limited to planned audit activities related to Canadian Banking businesses, Data Governance and Management, Cybersecurity, and Third Party Risk.
  • Managing the assessment of audit needs on risk profiles developed with the designated  business areas.
  • Establishing objectives and developing work plans covering audit activities and projects to  ensure the effective achievement of results.  This includes developing and negotiating the costs of audit services to be provided to the businesses and then managing to plan.
  • Ensuring that the reports provided to the designated business are supported by appropriate analysis and evidence.
  • Providing the necessary leadership to change strategy, direction and approach to take advantage of favourable patterns and trends within the auditing environment and avoid or alter those that are problematic.
  • Ensuring that the activities of the Audit Team are effective and cost efficient by:
  • Enhancing existing programs/services by assessing the impact, effectiveness and feasibility of proposed changes;
  • Making authoritative recommendations/decisions regarding implementations; and
  • Ensuring that audit projects are completed effectively and efficiently in line with the overall approved plan and with attention to applicable professional standards.

  • Provide leadership to a team of senior internal audit professionals and their direct reports in achieving the Internal Audit plan, executing on the Internal Audit strategy, executing the RESL audit strategy and achieving the financial plan.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to the team on best practices, change management, people management, and service quality to ensure the achievement of Internal Audit plan, management development, and succession planning.
  • Provide visible leadership by creating team spirit and champion CIBC’s purpose and leadership principles across Internal Audit.

What We’re Looking For

  • MBA or equivalent graduate degree, Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor or equivalent designation.
  • Deep knowledge of Real Estate Secured Lending and Canadian Banking businesses and regulatory environment gained through over 15 years of audit, business or consulting experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of banking operations and related control structure, practices and standards.
  • Extensive working knowledge of CIBC operations sufficient to apply, adapt and develop complex auditing practices and processes related to administrative/operational activities.
  • Experience in a senior audit role with comprehensive knowledge of risk assessment, auditing methodologies and demonstrated ability to apply these for Real Estate Secured Lending and Canadian Banking businesses.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of strategic, business and financial planning processes.
  • Strong people management and leadership skills sufficient to lead and motivate a team of internal audit professionals in achieving the goals and objectives set out in the Annual Audit Plan and continuous monitoring activities.
  • Ability to develop and coach audit professionals in order to ensure continuous alignment with, and understanding of, the goals of a rapidly changing business environment and to ensure continuous growth of professionalism within the team.
  • Problem solving skills sufficient to creatively develop unique approaches and solutions necessary to resolve complex problems.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills in order to establish effective relationships with senior executives within Canadian Banking, regulators, as well as counterparts in other organizations.
  • Proven ability to influence outcomes and gain consensus to resolve issues.
  • Strong presentation and interactive skills to convey opinion on issues requiring extensive interpretation.
  • Well-developed writing skills sufficient to prepare reporting that demonstrates articulation of ideas and opinions.
